“On the run like renegades” Adam said with a smile.
“That’s not exactly something to be excited about Adam” Adla replied with a stern look on her face. “This isn’t a X Ambassadors song Adam” she followed up. Adam tried to cover up how scared scared he was, because he knew his sister was stubborn, and as much as he’d like to protect his sister, he knew it was her who was much better at protecting him.
“What is up with all of this?! We have these weird ass powers we have no clue how to use, and ever since we started playing with them when we were little kids we’ve been having to move from place to place every time something weird happens!. Now these crazy guys are after us!” Adla was screaming she was breaking down, and starting to shake.
Adam held her before she could fall, and held her tight until she stopped shaking, when he moved his arm from around her, he realized his arm was soaked with tears.
“It’s okay Adla, we’re gonna figure this all out, it’s okay, it will all be okay, we’re together that’s all that matters.” Adam said in a calm sweet voice.
Adla just nodded, trying to convince herself all would be okay.
No money, no place to sleep, no idea where they are, both minors… with superhuman powers. All they knew was that they were somewhere in Texas. So before it got too dark they got to a nearby alleyway where they were able to curl up into each other and sleep. Turns out Texas isn’t too hot or too cold at night.
“Adam, ADAM!” Adla shreeked.
Barely waking up “What is it Adla, I hope you realize that the sun isn’t even up yet.” Adam said.
“I hear a noise Adam!” She screamed again.
“It’s probably nothing” He responded. “Go back to sleep”
Adla just curled up even tighter onto Adam’s chest. She tried to sleep, once again she was crying, but didn’t know.
“What just happened?!” Adam yelled because the piercing scream woke him from his deep sleep.
“I, I, I’m sorry Adam, I just, I…”
“It’s okay Adla, was it a nightmare?” He asked.
“Yes, uh, sorry, I, I just had a dream that you got killed by those men like Chase did” She said trembling.
“It’s okay Adla, I guess it’s early enough, let’s go ahead and get started” Adla responded.
“Get started going where?” She asked.
“I figure the best thing we can do is start heading back to Arizona” He said.
Adla nodded, as they got up and started walking.
They knew they couldn’t trust anyone, but at the same time, they needed to ask people where to go. Most people would rely on the signs, but as they continued to walk, they noticed that most were punctured with bullet holes.
“I am so tired” Adla stated.
“Maybe because we only got two hours of sleep Adla” He said in the most sassy tone.
“Do you have any food?” She asked.
“Only the flesh and skin I have on me, maybe if we go back to the alley you can find a rat to cook” He said smirking.
“Pass” She said.
Hours passed by. Nobody asked, but everybody stared as they walked through town in these horribly smelling rags. As noon started to set in Adam decided to stop through a small diner to ask about directions.
“Uhm, Hello” Adam said as Adla somewhat hid behind him.
“Howdy, man is that you that smells bad?” The man behind the counter asked.
“Probably, we were wondering how you could get to Arizona?” Adam asked.
“Where Arizona?” The man asked.
“Just Arizona” Adam replied.
The man was big, fat, and greasy he had a beard two inches long, and wore a hairnet on both his head and his chin. He had a scratchy voice with tinge of an accent.
“Well, for starters you turn around, because you’re heading in the wrong direction.” The man told Adam.
“Oh, okay, thanks” Adam replied.
“You kids got any parents?” He asked.
“No, we’re both adults” He lied. “We’re just going on a trip for fun, but our friends dropped us off here, but we have nowhere to go, but we know our friends are in Arizona.” He lied again.
“Well, how about this I’ll give you lunch on the house, and let you crash here for a few days if y’all will work for me. I need someone to sweep the place, and clean the bathrooms. Them truckers just let it all out after they have my famous breakfast burritos.” The man said.
Somewhat traumatized Adam said “If you don’t mind we’ll think it over.”
“Okay, well, you can think it over some burgers and fires, on the house.” The man responded.
“Oh, no, we have no money, we can’t accept that” Adla spoke up.
“You can little lady, that’s what on the house means, you don’t have to pay.” The man said as the twins took a seat.
They chose a seat furthest away from anyone around.
Almost instantly Adam said “I think we should do it”.
Adla just looked at him trying to keep her voice down “What the hell, are you crazy?!”
“Maybe, but that’s not the point here.” Adam said as stern and stubborn as usual.
“Do you remember the last time we trusted someone?! He kidnapped us, remember stupid.” Adla responded while smacking him upside the head.
“Okay, okay, but where else do we have to go?” Adam responded, but he brought up a very good point.
“Fine, but I’m not telling him.” Adla responded, not happy but they had nothing else.
“Just in case don’t use your powers around him, but if you need to tell me anything important send me a mind message. I am not planning on trusting this guy, but we need the cash and food. Okay?” He asked.
She nodded. That’s all that had to be said.
“Howdy kids, here’s the burgers” he placed the two burgers and the side of fries on the table overwhelming with grease, and the burgers were bigger than the two kid’s faces. “Have you thought about the offer?”
“Yes, Mr.? What’s your name exactly?” Adam asked.
“Bert, Bert McDoogal” He responded.
“Well, Mr. McDoogal, yeah, we decided we would take up your offer” Adam responded.
“Well then once you’re done with the burgers then we’ll get started, and by the way, don’t call me Mr. McDoogal, the name is Bert.” He said, nodded his head then left.
Adla and Adam looked at each other and drowned their worries in huge burgers.
